Finding the Right Foundation: How to Match Your Perfect Shade
September 10, 2026

Foundation is, to me, the most important product in my entire makeup bag. It is the canvas everything else is built upon. But I know from experience: finding the right shade can be frustrating. During my training at Art of Colors I learned how to properly analyse skin tones – and that is exactly what I am sharing with you today.
Why the right shade matters so much
A foundation that is too light, too dark or has the wrong undertone is instantly noticeable. It can make your face look mask-like, settle along the jawline or completely distort your natural skin colour. The right shade, on the other hand, makes it look like you are wearing nothing at all – just better skin.
Step 1: Determine your undertone
Your undertone is the key to everything. There are three categories:
- •Warm: Your skin has a golden, peachy or olive shimmer. Veins on the inside of your wrists appear greenish.
- •Cool: Your skin has a pink, reddish or bluish shimmer. Veins appear blue-purple.
- •Neutral: A mix of both – neither clearly warm nor cool.
My tip: look at the inside of your wrist in daylight. It tells you more than any in-store test.
Step 2: Choose the right formula
Not every foundation is the same. The texture should match your skin type:
- •Dry skin: Go for a creamy, hydrating foundation or a serum foundation.
- •Oily skin: Matte or semi-matte formulas hold better and control shine.
- •Combination skin: A satin-matte finish is usually the best choice.
- •Mature skin: Light, nourishing textures that do not settle into fine lines.
Step 3: Test properly
The most common mistake: testing foundation on the back of your hand. Your hand has a completely different shade to your face. Here is how to do it right:
- •Apply three similar shades along your jawbone.
- •Step into daylight – artificial light distorts everything.
- •The shade that disappears seamlessly is your match.
- •Wait 10 minutes – many foundations oxidise and become darker.
My personal tip: mix two shades
I almost never have just one foundation. My skin colour changes with the seasons, and I often mix a lighter and a darker shade to always match perfectly. I learned that at Art of Colors and still do it to this day.
Drugstore or high-end?
Honestly? Price alone says very little. There are excellent drugstore products and expensive disappointments. What matters: the formula must suit your skin and the shade must be right. Invest in the perfect match rather than the most expensive name.
Finding the right foundation is a small investment of time that pays off every single day. When the base is right, the rest of your makeup takes only half the effort – and looks twice as good.
