Gym Make-up: Looking Fresh Without Stressing Your Skin

I am often asked whether you should even wear make-up to the gym at all. My honest answer: the healthiest thing for your skin is a completely bare face while training. But I completely understand wanting to feel a little fresher and more confident sometimes. The key is to wear as little as possible – and to choose the right things.

Why less really is more here

During a workout your pores open, you sweat and you touch your face. Heavy foundation then mixes with sweat, clogs the pores and can lead to breakouts. So for the gym the rule is: light, breathable and water-resistant.

Skincare first – it is your best make-up

Before any colour comes into play, I prepare the skin. Well-cared-for skin needs almost nothing during sport.

  • A light, oil-free moisturiser that absorbs quickly.
  • A mineral sunscreen if you train outdoors.
  • Clean skin – never old make-up from the day before underneath.

My minimalist gym look

  • Tinted moisturiser or a skin tint instead of foundation: a hint of evenness while letting the skin breathe.
  • Concealer only where needed: a small dab where you really need it.
  • Waterproof mascara: the one step that instantly looks more awake and will not smudge.
  • A cream blush or tinted lip balm: for a natural, healthy freshness.
  • Brushed brows: a clear brow gel makes them look groomed without any colour.

What I deliberately leave off for the gym

Powder, heavy eyeshadow and thick foundation stay at home. They feel unpleasant when you sweat and can irritate the skin.

After the workout: the most important routine

The most important step comes after exercise. Cleanse your face as soon as possible to remove sweat and residue.

  • Cleanse right after training, not hours later.
  • Use a hydrating mist for a quick refresh.
  • Treat your skin to an extra dose of care afterwards.

A gym look is allowed to make you feel good – as long as it stays light and lets your skin breathe. In the end, the most beautiful workout glow is always the one your own body creates.
