Gym Make-up: Looking Fresh Without Stressing Your Skin
By Miriam Olivia · August 9, 2026

People ask me all the time if you should even wear make-up to the gym. Honest answer? Your skin is happiest with nothing on while you train. But I totally get it. Sometimes you just want to feel a bit fresher. The trick: wear as little as possible, and pick the right things.
Why less really is more here
When you work out, your pores open up, you sweat and you touch your face. Heavy foundation mixes with the sweat, clogs your pores and can give you breakouts. So for the gym: light, breathable and water-resistant.
Skincare first – it is your best make-up
Before any colour goes on, I prep my skin. Skin that's well looked after needs almost nothing at the gym.
- •A light, oil-free moisturiser that sinks in fast.
- •A mineral sunscreen if you train outside.
- •Clean skin. Never yesterday's make-up underneath.
My minimalist gym look
- •Tinted moisturiser or a skin tint instead of foundation. Evens things out a little and lets your skin breathe.
- •Concealer only where you need it. Just a tiny dab.
- •Waterproof mascara. One step and you look awake, and it won't run.
- •Cream blush or a tinted lip balm, for a bit of healthy colour.
- •Brushed-up brows. A clear brow gel makes them look neat, no colour needed.
What I deliberately leave off for the gym
Powder, heavy eyeshadow and thick foundation stay at home. They feel awful once you start sweating and can irritate your skin.
After the workout: the most important routine
The most important step comes after your workout. Wash your face as soon as you can, so sweat and leftovers come off.
- •Cleanse straight after training, not hours later.
- •A hydrating mist for a quick refresh.
- •Give your skin a little extra care afterwards.
Your gym look should make you feel good, as long as it stays light and your skin can breathe. And honestly, the best workout glow is the one your body makes all by itself.
